Why treatment is needed
Dental infections rarely resolve simply because symptoms temporarily improve. Your dentist needs to identify the source and advise on suitable treatment.
When symptoms are urgent
Contact the practice promptly if you have swelling, fever or worsening pain. Rapidly spreading swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or severe illness requires immediate emergency medical care.
Practical steps to remember
- Contact your practice promptly
- Do not apply heat to facial swelling
- Call 999 if breathing or swallowing is affected
If severe swelling affects breathing or swallowing, call 999 or attend A&E immediately. For out-of-hours urgent dental advice, call NHS 111.
